I just finished reading Zucked: Waking Up to the Facebook Catastrophe by Roger McNamee.📚
The book is a good read, and it confirms what we today know if you follow the topic. Interestingly that I just recently stumbled onto this youtube video: Manipulating the YouTube Algorithm - (Part 1/3) Smarter Every Day 213. It also mentions the same issues and even interviews Renée DiResta as well. It is the third time this year I stumble over here name.
Contrary to the title the book does not only talk about Facebook but also about Google. Moreover, it also talks about the danger and downsides of technology generally.
Today we have some control over the degree to which IoT devices influence our life because most of us are not yet using them. Take the time to consider the dark side of any new technology before embracing its convenience.
We should be careful before embracing new tools and platforms, especially when you don’t pay for a service with money. On the other side, I’m never sure that on services where I pay they not also doing the same in the background. Under this aspect, I like the authors’ proposal regarding changes to the law allowing the user to own all his or her data including the metadata. I’m just not sure how we solve this; one possible solution could be something like this: Solid.
