This issue starts to explain why there are so many young terrorists in this world. The last part of an excellent series so far and this issue also contains some surprises. I like that the author does not make the story longer. He certainly could. I certainly recommend this series when you want to read end of world scenarios. It contains some massive battles, but we don’t get pages upon pages with strategy guides like other books.

Review of Knife of Dreams, The Wheel of Time, Book 11

Review of Knife of Dreams, The Wheel of Time, Book 11 audiobook 📚.

The book drags a bit, but it picks up again towards the end - luckily. I already lost all hope for the plot, but it still managed to get a bit better and come to a useful conclusion. Our main characters Tom and Hester, meet a famous explorer and author, and while fleeing from some other airships, get lost on a dying city in the far north.
Although the book is an easy read, the story did not manage to glue me to the book.

Review of The Shadow Rising, The Wheel of Time, Book 4

Review of The Shadow Rising, The Wheel of Time, Book 4 audiobook 📚. Part four of the series and the last time for a very long time where our three ta’veeren are together in the same location.
The book starts in Tear, where Rand is learning to be a ruler and how to be in love. But soon, the different groups split up. Perin travels back to the Two Rivers together with Faile and Loial, where he hopes to settle his debt with the Whitecloaks.

Review of A Series of Unfortunate Events #2

I just finished reading A Series of Unfortunate Events #2: The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket.📚

At the beginning of the story, we are introduced to the three main protagonists, the Baudelaire siblings. Due to a fire, the parents are dead, and they now need a new home. The home is found quite fast, but unfortunately, the person responsible for them currently does not really love them and has a more significant interest in getting to the inherited fortune of the orphans.

Review of The Blacksmith's Son (Mageborn Book 1)

I just finished reading The Blacksmith’s Son (Mageborn Book 1) by Michael G. The book starts with the main person named Mordekai rescuing a horse from a river. While doing this, he realizes that he is a wizard. To research this better, he goes on a holiday to his friend’s castle, where he also luckily directly finds three beginners’ spellbooks.

Review of The Dragon Reborn, The Wheel of Time, Book 3

Review of The Dragon Reborn, The Wheel of Time, Book 3 audiobook 📚. One of my favorite books in the series. I especially like the ending with the fall of the Stone.
I also like the first real occurrences of the Aiel and how our main cast works with them. I have again forgotten how Gaul got attached to Perin so early on in the series. And in these earlier parts, I still like the storyline of Perrin.

Review of Secrets and Spellcraft (Art of the Adept Book 2)

I just finished reading Secrets and Spellcraft (Art of the Adept Book 2) by Michael G. After finishing the first book, I directly wanted to know how the story develops further. We still follow Will, who is now a student at Wurthaven. And he also realized that the teaching method at this school is not good enough for himself.
And as expected in such a story, our main protagonist still starts to accomplish one unimaginable feat after another – which at times is a bit hard to believe to be realistic.

Review of The Choice of Magic (Art of the Adept Book 1)

I just finished reading The Choice of Magic (Art of the Adept Book 1) by Michael G. Another book proposed by the algorithm of Amazon, and as I was for the lookout for something lighter to read, I’ve decided to give it a try. The book did not disappoint. It is the classic hero story but with some twists.
I especially liked how magic is working in this world and how he is learning it.

Review of The Word for World is Forest (Hainish Cycle)

I just finished reading The Word for World is Forest (Hainish Cycle) by Ursula K. The book’s story has an unusual structure. It starts in the middle of the story, and each chapter is alternating between the past and the future. In the past chapter, we are told the childhood and growing up of the main character Shevek.
In the future chapter, we are told about his journey to the sister planet Urrasti where he is a guest of a country called A-Io.

Review of Shadow of the Conqueror (Chronicles of Everfall Book 1)

I just finished reading Shadow of the Conqueror (Chronicles of Everfall Book 1) by Shad Brooks.📚 This book is the first book by Youtuber Shad from Shadiversity channel. It is fascinating how Ms. Le Guin can write Science Fiction without ever needing to invent or explain technology. It took some time to get into the story. The book contains two timelines. One timeline called “After” is situated after the global networks stopped working. The second issue connects directly after the first book. We now have a station on the moon, and Elma York – the main protagonist – works now as a space bus driver on the moon for half the year.
But as this does not make for an exciting book, she soon managed to get onto the first mission to Mars.

Review of The Calculating Stars: A Lady Astronaut Novel

I just ended reading The Calculating Stars: A Lady Astronaut Novel by Mary Robinette Kowal.📚
I’m not sure anymore where I found this book, but I liked it! It reminded me a lot to the Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. I think mostly due to a similar structure, but this book is undoubtedly less science fiction and more alternate history. Another aspect is for this story is the accessible writing style of the author.

Review of Starsight (Skyward Book 2)

I just finished reading Starsight (Skyward Book 2) by Brandon Sanderson.📚A worthy second issue for this series.
Spin’s character is growing in this issue, form only beeing a pilot to something more. Now she also needs to be a spy and a politician. And infiltrate a base of the central galactic government. So this book expands the universe of the story quite a lot, and we also finally get some answers – not all answers but certainly enough to understand the setting better.

Review of Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years of Lockheed

I just finished reading Skunk Works: A Personal Memoir of My Years of Lockheed by Ben R. We get an introduction into the secret world of the development of multiple secret airplanes, and the problems the engineers needed to overcome to deliver these fantastic machines.
The book is captivating and exciting to read about the development of airplanes. The book shows how humans are radicalized with the help of the Internet. It has a main topic on the right radicalism. It also shows some of the aspects of radical Islamic groups as well. I was missing any mention of left radicalism in the book :-) as I’m pretty sure these are also using the same mechanisms to achieve their goals.

Review of DOORS X - Dämmerung: Roman (Die Doors-Serie Staffel 1)

I just finished reading DOORS X - Dämmerung: Roman (Die Doors-Serie Staffel 1) by Markus Heitz.📚
It is the last book of the first season, and I liked it the least of all. The protagonists go through the door into the future. And we get a short introduction to a future version of Frankfurt. The book tells the story of Spensa, the daughter of a fighter pilot. Her home is a desert planet in the distant future, and she belongs to a group of humans who crash-landed on this planet 2 Generations ago. She dreams of being a pilot, as well, but there are quite some obstacles for her to overcome.

Review of the Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, Book 1)

I just finished reading The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, Book 1) by Brandon Sanderson.📚This book is good, and the pages are just flying past me while reading.
I like how the author describes the ever desperate live of Kaladin and how he always managed to go further. Then we have the opposite character trying to get a position as a ward with a famous researcher but only with the plan to betray her.

Review of the Academy of Stolen Magic

I just finished reading The Academy of Stolen Magic: YA Paranormal Academy Book Two (Blakemore Paranormal Academy 2) by Sullivan Gray.📚
The second book connects directly to the end of the first book, and actually, these should have been one book. This book mostly covers the relationship drama of the main character. And we also get to know a bit more about the main story. But I got the strong feeling that the main adventure is not essential, and the love relationship is the central part of the story 😢.

Review of Supernatural Reform School

I just finished reading Supernatural Reform School (Blakemore Paranormal Academy Book 1) by Sullivan Gray.📚
I got this book recommended by Amazon, and the brief sounded interesting. It reads quite easy and is not too long and expensive, and I like the setting, so I started reading it. I did not like the main character in the first few chapters; she is not real and has some strange ideas. But this gets a lot better after the introduction to the book.

Review of Under a Tell-Tale Sky

I just finished reading Under a Tell-Tale Sky: After the EMP (Disruption Trilogy Book 1) by R.E. McDermott.📚This book was another Amazon proposal, and I quite liked it.
The story starts just before a significant solar eruption hits the earth destroying the complete power grid on most of the planet. It then shows the actions of multiple groups in North America how they try to survive in this post-apocalyptic world.

Review of The Circle

I finished reading The Circle by Dave Eggers.📚 The book starts quite harmlessly, but somehow you suspect that something is off. It does not take long until you begin to see the cracks in the shiny circle world, which each additional monitor installed at the main protagonist desk.
Sometimes I felt exhausted thinking about all the thing which are expected of the circle workers in the after hours. They are never mandatory, but if you miss them, you will get a concerned talk.

Review of Rise of Gaia

I finished reading Rise of Gaia by Kristin Ward.📚 This book was hard to start and get into the story.
The main protagonist of this story has a connection with mother earth. And she is angry because we humans destroy everything. The story spends quite a lot of time showing how the protagonist lives and get deeper into the connection with Gaia.
Part of the book reminded me of the Princess Mononoke anime.

Review of Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones

I finished reading Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones by James Clear.📚I liked this book quite a lot, and it is easy to read and written in an accessible style.
The book is divided into four sections, each explaining how you can build new habits and improve your life. The main takeaway of the book is that you don’t need significant practices but just a lot of small good ones.

Review of A Wind in the Door (A Wrinkle in Time Quintet Book 2)

I’ve decided to read the next issue of the “A Wrinkle in Time Quintet”. And just finished A Wind in the Door (A Wrinkle in Time Quintet Book 2) by Madeleine L’Engle the other day 📚.
The story was a lot easier to get into; I suspect this is because I already know the characters and the writing style of the author. We start back at the home of our protagonists, and Charles Wallace sees strange occurrences in the garden.

Review of Soul Jacker: A Science Fiction Thriller (Soul Jacker Book 1)

I ended reading Soul Jacker: A Science Fiction Thriller (Soul Jacker Book 1) by Michael John Grist.📚It took quite a while to get into the book and get used to the writing style of the author. But starting with the middle of the book, I was hooked.
The story is set in the future in a world which was destroyed by tsunamis. The only habitable place is near the poles, which are no longer covered in ice.

Review of How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin' Days (The Tale of Bryant Adams Book 1)

I just finished reading How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days (The Tale of Bryant Adams Book 1) by Megan O’Russell📚. Another book by the same author as “The Tethering” series. I’ve quite liked her writing style so far.
The main character finds a phone on his way home, and it happens to be magical. And unfortunately, the owner wants the phone back ;-) But it’s not as simple as it’s sounds, so the adventure begins.

Review of Practical Microservices: Build Event-Driven Architectures with Event Sourcing and CQRS

I just ended reading Practical Microservices: Build Event-Driven Architectures with Event Sourcing and CQRS by Ethan Garofolo.📚 This book finally gave me an understanding of microservices I now see the value in this architecture.
Before the book, my understanding was, that I split my monolithic data model into multiple smaller data models and connect everything back together. However, I was never so happy with this concept, as we now lose the capability to make SQL joins over the full data model.

Review of The Dragon Unbound (The Tethering Book 3)

I read The Dragon Unbound (The Tethering Book 3) by Megan O’Russell.📚
After the second issue, this book felt like it moved the plot forward again. It keeps the focus on the four main heroes and shows how they try to take part in the war. They still need to learn how to work together and especially trust each other’s intuition.
A big part of the book looks at the relationship between Emila and Jacob.

Review of The Sirens Realm (The Tethering Book 2)

I finished reading The Siren’s Realm (The Tethering Book 2) by Megan O’Russell.📚
This issue deepens the connections between our two main protagonists, while the war between the wizard fractions is starting, Jacob and Emilia go onto a quest together to find some information they hope can help in the fight.
I like the second issue a bit better compared to the first, as it took some different turns I was not expecting at the time.

Review of the Tethering (The Tethering Book 1)

I found my next Harry Potter-like series: The Tethering by Megan O’Russell📚. An orphan gets to know that he is a wizard and goes off to a small private Wizzard boarding school. The first half of the story, I was not yet so convinced about it, as it looked too much like a clone. Though starting with the middle, this changed, and the author introduced some original ideas in her book.

Review of The Expert System's Brother

I finished reading The Expert System’s Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky📚a short book about an unknown future of the human race.
The social life of the human species was modified to survive in the current ecosystem, and everybody now has a specific job in the group. This book is a classic coming of age fantasy story, and it is written obviously for children. I love the main protagonist Kalina and how she develops during the book.

Review of On the Oceans of Eternity

I just finished reading On the Oceans of Eternity: A Novel of the Change by S. M. Stirling.📚This book was not an easy read – which I expected from the start – but it was still a good book. This book concluded the series of the Islander’s from Nantucket, they finish the war with Walker and live happily ever after ;-)
I like the idea of this story quite much, but for my taste, it has to much battle and scenery description instead of storytelling.

Review of Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It

I recently finished reading Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It by Chris Voss.📚
The book reads quite easy, and each chapter begins with an example of a real live negotiation situation from the authors past. I like the examples better than the explanation parts following after. The book is rather short but luckily there another three books :-).
The book was reminding me of the book Momo by the German author Michael Ende. It has a lovely main cast with problems I can relate quite a lot. So I naturally read Homeland by Cory Doctorow📚 as my next book. The book was a rollercoaster for my emotions, but I still liked it.
The story starts slow but is accelerating throughout the novel, and I could not let go of it until I nearly had it finished. Compared with Walkaway it is a lot more on the practical side and less philosophical, which makes it easier to read.

Review of Walkaway

To the first days of a better nation – or not, I just finished reading Walkaway: A Novel by Cory Doctorow 📚.
Walkaway is the second book I read from this author, some years ago I strumbled upon Little brother which I liked. I’ve seen some parallels from that book to Walkaway, but you also notice that the author has grown in his writing style. At the start of the book, I was expecting something lighthearted and less dense to read – more like from what I remember Little brother to be – but I’ve got something entirely on the other side of the spectrum.

Review of Pitch Anything

I just finished reading Pitch Anything: An Innovative Method for Presenting, Persuading, and Winning the Deal by Oren Klaff.📚
I’ve heard about this book from multiple sides. And I was interested in the topic to broaden my horizon. It took me quite some time to get into the subject of the book. I review the following books here:
Artificial Condition: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells Rogue Protocol: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells Exit Strategy: The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells The story expands on the concept of the first book, but it starts a new story arc over the next three books. The main character needs the money and joins a crew of an asteroid mining ship. This job pays better than anything else he could do. Of course there is also a high risk of dying, but in this case, there is insurance. The book starts with how she grew up to become the women she is today. It was interesting to read how she needed to learn how to be strong and how important it was for her in reaching any life goals.

Review of Out of Spite, Out of Mind by Scott Meyer

And another Magic 2.0 book read: Out of Spite, Out of Mind (Magic 2.0 Book 5) by Scott Meyer.📚
I gave the series another change, the characters are still a bit shallow, and the author is continually repeating the same thing the characters are doing. But somehow I cannot stop reading it! The beginning of the book was dull, but it got better towards the end.
I like the concept behind the series, but I cannot lose the feeling that the characters are a bit childish.

Review of The Invisible Gorilla by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons

Review of The Invisible Gorilla by Christopher Chabris and Daniel Simons.📚
I will never trust my brain again! I think this is what I take out of reading this book. Especially chapter two about the “illusion of memory.” I can see how this works with the example given in the book, where they ask the question what you did on nine eleven. I have a strong memory of this day, but after reading this chapter, I start to doubt it even more.

Review of Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve

Last week I finished reading Mortal Engines (Predator Cities Book 1) by Philip Reeve.📚 Seen the trailer for the movie before Christmas and was intrigued about the story. The book is an easy read. Unfortunately, the author is quite repetitive in his writing. Multiple characters are saying the same things. I understand that these are like proverbs in this world, but it still sounds a bit forced. Luckily the book took some unexpected turns towards the end, and I’m glad it did not lead to an entirely happy ending.

Review of The Stand by Stephen King

I just finsihed reading The Stand by Stephen King.📚 I’ve heard about this book on the Reconcilable Differences podcast on episode 90. It is my second time reading anything from Steven King. The first instance was Firestarter, which I consumed last year.
I have not read more from him as I was subconsciously making a big circle around this author, as for me his name is connected with horror, a genre I don’t like at all.

Review of All Systems Red by Martha Wells

I just finished reading All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells.📚
This was such a good book it reminded of Run Program by Scott Meyer but in a more adult version. Although the main character is not a human you still care for it – and I’m pretty sure it would not like this ;-) It’s a rather short novel. There are further issues, but the first book can stand on its own.

Review of the Gate of Gods (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy 3)

I just terminated reading The Gate of Gods (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy 3) by Martha Wells.📚
This book was a lot better again compared to the central issue. I was glad not to abandon the series after the second book. This book finishes the story arc and gives a nice conclusion for the characters. I would gladly read more book set in the same universe. There is undoubtedly a lot of potential for good books here.

Review of The Selection (The Selection Series, Book 1)

I just finished reading The Selection (The Selection Series, Book 1) by Kiera Cass – again.📚
This series is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. It’s not high-quality prose, but I still like it, and I think this is now the third or fourth time I read this book, which makes it onto the third place of the most reread books (this is an excellent topic to write about – need to take a note of it).

Review The Ships of Air (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy Book 2)

Last week I finished reading The Ships of Air (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy Book 2) by Martha Wells.📚
The second book starts, where the story in book one ended. The first half of this book could not deliver on the high expectations I had after reading the first issue. The story was dragging along most of the time, and there was no sense of progress. I see that this is quite a different way to manage long journeys in books, instead of just ignoring the time it takes to get from a to b.

Review The Wizard Hunters (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy Book 1)

I was following the discussion of some of the people on Micro.blog about Martha Wells and decided that I want to read The Wizard Hunters (The Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy Book 1) by Martha Wells.📚 I like, how the author does the worldbuilding in this book. It has a refreshing combination of a modern tale about ware sprinkled with fantasy elements. I had some problems with getting the motivation of the main character, but after the first third of the book the motivation was understandable, and to the end of the book, it was also relatable.

Review Hello World - How to be Human in the Age of the Machine

On my stay in London this autumn I saw an advertisement for Hello World: How to be Human in the Age of the Machine by Hannah Fry.📚
I like thinking about such problems, and the book displays all the problems we have with AI and machine learning algorithms. Some of the examples given in the book are known when you are interested in this topic. But this book composes a nice collection of all the anecdotes and also gives further insight into the issues the different algorithms have.

Review of Borderline – Book one of the Arcadia Project series)

Borderline (The Arcadia Project) by Mishell Baker 📚 is a rather short book which went onto my reading list, I think while browsing Amazon the other day. Due to travel plans for the weekend, I needed something new to read, so I gave it a shot. I only realized after half of the book that this is sort of a detective/crime solving novel, a genre I usually avoid. It was a lucky happenstance as otherwise, I would have missed out of a good book and possible series.

Review Twenty Thousand Leagues Under

I’ve read Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas by Jules Verne.📚 when I was a child quite some time ago and decided it is time for a reread. It is still a beautiful book to read, but I completely forgot that it consists of mostly listing of fish and other beast living in the sea. I’m not sure if as a child I was riding an abridged version of this book.

Review Children of the Mind

The last book in the Ender series (Children of the Mind📚) and the second best in my opinion after the first part. I’ve started reading this book and did not realize how fast I was reading it when I’ve next looked at the page counter, and it was already up to 75 percent.
I like the how this book creates a logical conclusion of the story arc and at the same time introduces new concepts which allow transforming the whole universe created in the first three books.

Review Xenocide

I just read Xenocide (The Ender Quartet series Book 3) by Orson Scott Card.📚
I’ve just finished the third book in the Ender quartet series from Mr. Card. I needed to force myself multiple times to “close” the book in the evening and go to sleep as the pages were flying past my eye. It was a long time since I was so immersed in a book like with this.

Review Speaker for the Dead

I just read Speaker for the Dead (The Ender Quartet series Book 2) by Orson Scott Card 📚.
I’ve read this after finishing Enders Game starting the book I was not sure if I will like it as it is entirely different from the setting of Enders Game. But after the first 100 pages, I was in the story and could not stop reading the book. This story has a lot of persons and a lot of names which are (for me) quite similar in sound, never mind that I’m unable to sound out the names correctly, as they are mostly Portuguese.
