November 2020

I just showed my daughter Swift Playgrounds. It looks like she is interested. I’ve known about this for quite some time but have not looked at it in detail. I would have loved to have such a resource back when I tried to learn to code!

I spent yesterday trying to get doctors’ appointments – a task I’ve should have done a long time again. But somehow, this task filled my whole day, and in the end, I have nothing to show for it — apart from finally making the step and call.

I don’t understand why the system is so complicated and why I do need to dictate email addresses from other doctors via the phone so that my primary doctor can send a transfer note.

The system feels so broken and inefficient. I have the feeling that there should be a better solution, but I don’t have an idea right now.

2020 causes a dilemma for many people. Is the job safe, should I meet my friends, should I go on a holiday?

Experience and wisdom count for more than vast technical knowledge. And, in fact, I don’t have that knowledge, except in the few places where I need it. I know how to get technical knowledge, though. I look things up. I learn. I ask questions. I ask for help. Same as you!

I have these feelings as well, and it helps to know you are not alone. I like to understand how everything works, but I don’t have a profound knowledge of every programming language or feature. But sometimes, this feels like it is not good enough.

inessential: No Jedi.

On Magic Systems (in Books)

I’m thinking a lot about magic systems in the last few days. I also realized that I like books with magic in general, but I like it way more when the author spends some time finding a unique, not run of the mill magic system for his world. The most important question to any magic system is how it is limited because a world where there is limitless power does not make for an exciting story.

Sometimes, when I try to recreate a bug that does not look possible, it helps me take a step back to find the solution. Unfortunately, this is a skill I struggle with quite a lot.

So it looks like I’ve finally managed to write a short story that could be published. I need to sleep over it and edit the text again. But right now, I’m optimistic about it – and happy.

I say a lot to my child every day, but she receives only half of it. I expect this ratio to decline further as she gets older.

I’m just not sure how to mark them. I would like not to use any more repetitive elements. And I’m not too fond of spoiler tags. Any opinions or ideas?
