Review of A Memory of Light, The Wheel of Time, Book 14
Review of A Memory of Light, The Wheel of Time, Book 14 audiobook 📚.
The final book in the story! We stand before the last battle. Every faction is preparing his or her soldiers. War plans are made – and then discarded again. I have forgotten most of what happens in the last battle; I only remembered Egwene’s battle scenes. But this is a bit sad as so much is happening in this book.
The ploy of the chosen to taint the great generals’ minds to lose the battle was a devious idea. And how the characters react to this when they find out about it. And Mat comes to the rescue once again. And speaking of Mat in this book, the persons again comes to life entirely. He also sounds and behaves like his old self.
Somehow the chapters with Rand were the least interesting for me in this book. Yes, he is fighting the big boss, but somehow his scenes were not as emotional regarding the other cast in the book. He certainly had some revelations while fighting. And I’m glad he was allowed to survive the battle.
I liked how Perrin learned some new skills in the Wolfdream. It looks like we now have a new master in this domain. I would like to know how the Dreamwalkers react to this development.
The scene with Elyne, Brigitte, and Melar is heart-wrenching. Melar is always there when he is the least welcome. But I think he finally met his deserved end, and Brigitte also gets a happy ending from it. Poor Cadsuaine, at the end of the book, got neatly tangled in an Aes Sedai net :-D. But somehow, I’ve missed Thom Merrilin in this book.
And on the audiobook front, I think the experiment worked. I will not use the format for the first time reading, but it works for me when revisiting a series sometime later. And it is also certainly faster than directly reading a book. But for this last book, I realized that I could not listen passively to it. There are so many details going on with all the different battlefields. But I’m just not fond of battles in books, especially if they get too long and big, so this book is certainly not a favorite of the series. But the book is an excellent ending to an outstanding series. And I’m still quite fond of the series. So now I wait for the TV-Show to be released.
Looking through all my reviews, I still say that the third book The Dragon Reborn is my favorite book in the series. Followed by book seven A Crown of Swords due to the short in world time and the multiple parallel plotlines used in this book. And the last book on my list is A Gathering Storm, the first written by Brandon Sanderson. I love it, especially for the White Tower plot, but also because the series continued after the death of Rober Jordan and did not lose in quality.
