Homepage History (v1-v6)

With the release of Version 7, it is time again to document my old homepage designs. So I don’t lose this information in the past.

This post contains a list of all my homepage designs over time. I like to keep a log of how the homepage has changed since it’s inception. The list is complete, but between version five and six, there was quite a long gap where the homepage was not online at all.

Version 6 (around 2018 - 2020)

Version six was the big reboot of my page. It also marks the switch away from PHP to static page generators, in this case to Jekyll.

The homepage of version 6

After a long break from my homepage (mainly due to Facebook), I’ve restarted my homepage again. I built it mostly as an alternative to post my short status updates as I was fed up with the algorithm covering the Facebook timeline more and more. Over time I took blogging more seriously and started also writing longer-form posts. In the beginning, mostly with reviews and comments about the books, I’m reading.

I’ve used a set of Shortcuts on my phone to post most of the short status updates. The shortcuts created new files directly in the git Repository with the help of Working Copy. The shortcuts were working quite well over time.

At home, I have Jenkins running on a Mac Mini, which polls the git repo. As soon as a new commit is found, the homepage is rebuilt. The Jenkins job takes around five to eight minutes to complete and then pushes the build result to my web host.

Version 5 (around 2007)

My main homepage for a very long time. I was not blogging a lot on this page. Mostly I was, documenting my work on creating an MMORPG.

Version 5 back to grey

Version 4 (around 2006)

I’ve changed the color to blue, but most changes in this version were behind the scenes and not visible to the end-user.

Version 3 (around 2005)

Fixed the layout for the page and made something nicer. I’ve also allowed some color back into my life. Unfortunately, this tone of green was not so web-safe. And on most other monitors, it was looking horrendous.

Version 2 (around 2004)

Ough – I was young is the only excuse I have for this version ;-). But it looks that I now had more time to work on my homepage as I was a student at that time.

Version 2 ough

Version 1 (around 2003)

I don’t remember anymore when I created this design. From the content in the screenshot, I suspect this was in the spring of 2003.

Version 1 a lot of oranges
