Review of Scholar of Magic (Art of the Adept Book 3)

I just finished reading Scholar of Magic (Art of the Adept Book 3) (English Edition) by Michael G. Manning.📚

Will is back at Wurthaven, but instead of learning at the school, he needs to protect his half-sister from an unknown assassin. Selene, his wife, cannot support him as she is in hiding at an undisclosed location. A fact which also starts to cause suspicions with her close friends and the king.

With everybody wary of Will, he needs to find a solution to protect his sister and the whole city against a very ancient and powerful enemy.

I liked the first two books I’ve read in the spring very much. But have forgotten to check back if there is anything new. Luckily I’ve done so now, and to my surprise, there were two further issues of the series waiting for me. I needed some time to get back into the world and the author’s writing style. There was quite some adjustment needed, but I enjoyed the book after I did this – not as much as the first two issues.

I liked the development of the main character, which he undergoes in this book. I was not so happy that the author moved Wil’s wife to the side for most of the story, rather like her character. It felt a bit as if the author was unsure how to handle this character, which is strange as there was no such issue in the first two books.

The extension of the astral projection and the possibility to share other people’s bodies was an exciting development – but I was not too fond of the relatively long part where Will was experimenting with his sister’s body. I did not feel that this actually brought much to the book and was mostly fan service.
