Review of Witch's Jewel (Kit Melbourne Book 1)

I just finished reading Witch’s Jewel (Kit Melbourne Book 1) by Kater Cheek.📚

Kit Melbourne is a young artist struggling to meets ends and working part-time in her brother’s cafe. Her recently deceased uncle left her a mysterious bindi, with the instruction to not sell it.

Soon after, multiple strange persons show up at the cafe trying to buy the gem from Kit, and her brother makes an ominous foretelling about her future.

Opinion

Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.

I liked the world-building used in this book. There is not too much explaining done, the world is just there, and with every page, you discover something new. On the other side, I had my problems with not mixing up the characters. Multiple scene changes were quite jarring and not always clear while reading.

On to the main character, she has some major issues – I can understand this from her past as explained in the book. But if she only would listen to the people around her and not directly go into self-pity, Kit could have spared herself a lot of worrying and self-doubt. I’m not quite sure – perhaps it is just because I’m outside as a reader, but I had quite some trouble understanding her actions and reactions to events in the story.

Apart from these technical flaws, I still enjoyed the book and am planning to read the next issue. I’m quite curious as to where the author will bring this series.
