Review of Small Gods: (Discworld Novel 13)
I just finished reading Small Gods: (Discworld Novel 13) (Discworld series) by Sir Terry Pratchett.📚
There are many gods on the Discworld. And due to this, there is much competition between the big and small gods out there. And it is quite crucial in which form you manifest in the physical world to gather believers. Because without believers, a god is nothing.
For the “great” god Omn, there is right now only one believer. Brutha a lowly acolyte in the central temple. Brutha is not happy with the voice he starts to hear in his head as he wants to live his life in peace.
“Sandals flapping, Brutha set off towards the Place. Bishops move diagonally. That’s why they often turn up where the kings don’t expect them to be.”
Opinion
Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.
This is not the first Discworld book I’ve read, but it is the first I write are review. I’ve started reading this series more than ten years ago, and there are still a lot of books to read ;-) I generally like the humor and world-building used in this world. It took me some time to really get into this book here.
“Om sighed. “If I don’t concentrate, I think like a tortoise!” “What? You mean slowly?” “No! Tortoises are cynics. They always expect the worst.”
The idea that a god without believers loses his power is pretty nice. And then giving it the form of a turtle, which everybody constantly wants to eat is gold.
At times I felt pity for Omn when he tried to get Brutha to understand what he should do. I really liked the interactions between these two characters.
And I also like the supporting cast with the Atheist philosophers that go into a building with a metal roof when speaking badly of the gods – to prevent any issues with the thunder god as many of the philosophers learned, it the hard way to not speak badly about the gods.
