Review of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter 4)
I just finished listening Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Harry Potter 4) by J.K. Rowling.📚
Book four in the series starts with a firework of action. First, Harry visits the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasleys. Then back for another year at Hogwarts, a big surprise is unveiled by the teachers.
Opinion
Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.
Luckily, you don’t need to spend any budget for sets when writing a book. In this book, a lot of energy is used for the first third to create a setting and world-building for a one-off event that has no further relevance to the story – and understand me correctly – I love the Quidditch World Cup arc of the book. It brings so much color and energy to the story.
I like how the killing curse is called “Avada Kedavra,” something Muggles use without thinking too much about ;-) I think that is one of the interesting parts of world-building in the whole series, at least in small details.
I like the part about the Elves’ rights, and I’m appalled how everybody of the supposed to be good characters shrug it off and dismiss the points. But it is hard to see that a system you’re used to and profit from is wrong and should change.
Another thought I constantly had while listening to the book was that the Triwizard Tournament must be pretty boring for the spectators. Except for the first task, all other tasks happen where nobody sees what is happening. And I’m surprised that there are no magical cameras you could place underwater to show some action – or inside the maze.
And nobody realized that two of the champions vanished for half an hour from your magical maze? That sounds a bit hard to believe.
I still love the book and this part, especially for its darker setting, but I should not try to apply logic to it ;-)
