Review of Curtsies and Conspiracies (Finishing School Book 2)

I just finished reading Curtsies and Conspiracies: Number 2 in series (Finishing School) by Gail Carriger.📚

The first year at the finishing school behind her, Sophronia starts the next chapter.

Her etiquette skill is still subpar contrary to her espionage skills, which she can prove once again, while the school travels to London where a mysterious technical breakthrough will happen.

Sophronia does not trust the teachers’ statement that they are only present to observe – so while the other girls plan shopping trips and balls, she starts researching what’s going on behind the scene.

Opinion

Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.

The second issue could still keep the high level of the first book. We learn more about the world in this issue, especially about the different political parties and how they interact together.

In this book, Sophronia also starts to realize that actions sometimes can have unexpected consequences. And that you don’t always like the results of that. I thought this was handled very nicely by the author, which is best shown with the following quote from the book:

“Sophronia, truth to tell, was having an internal crisis. She hadn’t meant to drive Shrimpdittle to such lengths, but it was her fault. She had convinced the poor man that Professor Braithwope had bitten him. She had driven him to sabotage the guidance valve in the aether-suit. If Professor Braithwope died, she was to blame.”

The second issue is also a fast-paced book, and I look forward to the next issue of the series.
