Review of Telepath

I finished reading Telepath (Hive Mind Book 1) by Janet Edwards.๐Ÿ“š

Humankind is living in hives โ€“ protected from the outside โ€“ and every person upon reaching age 18 is entering a lottery to receiving a fulfilling job. Amber is one of those entering the Lottery of 2532. She fears getting assigned a low-level job and hopes to be at least on the same levels as her parents. But the lottery process does not pan out as expected, and she soon needs to cope with a completely new and unexpected reality.

Opinion

Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.

I like what I readโ€”especially the internal monologue of the main character. I’m curious where the story goes and if Amber is indeed in charge as she’s been told.

The interaction between Amber, the book’s main character, and her tactical team leader Lucas is delightful. I also like that Lucas and Amber do talk directly and do not keep back. But keeping things back with a telepath is not possible anyway. I’m curious when she finds the first person she can not read.

I’m unhappy that her teenage crush Forge made it also onto her strike team. However, it was inevitable as we need our love triangle ;-) I think the author handled this situation differently from regular YA books, and it made for a better book!

The ending of the book felt a bit abrupt. We spent a lot of time setting up the scene and world and the bad guy, but there is no natural closure in the end. We don’t learn what he wanted and how he did it. Of course, you can say that is good as his mind was faulty, so there was no possibility of asking him, but I still wished for one additional scene with him instead of a cut into the main characters’ future.

I’m curious about how the series progresses and looking forward to the next issue.
