🍿 Dune Movie 2021

On Thursday, I went to the cinema for the first time since 2019 (this is longer than I expected). I’ve watched Dune. I’m still not clear if I liked the movie or not. Technically the movie is well done and has amazing visuals. But something in the movie is bugging me. I can’t quite voice what it is.

One aspect I struggle with is the speed of the storytelling. The movie is long, but at times it felt too slow. And I’m very conflicted with this statement as I usually like it when a movie has room to breathe, and it’s not just a rollercoaster as so much needed to be stuffed into the time (Thinking about Ready player one here). But I think Dune could have required a bit more speed.

At times I also felt in a vast info dump to introduce the world before the actual story starts – in the next movie. But then again, we got coherent parts of the story, which allowed me to dive into it and enjoy it. But overall, I think there was not enough of it for me.

A good summary of the movie is to interpret it as documentation about the Dune universe interspersed with some reenacting of essential events.
