Review of Terms May Apply
I just finished reading Terms May Apply by Keith A Pearson.📚
What price would you pay to have a wish fulfilled? Our main character Kyle needs to find the answer to this question.
Unhappy with his life and rejected for a job promotion, he makes a wish – which actually comes true. Some days later, he becomes acquainted with Mr. Wishkin, who wants to have his payment for fulfilling the wish.
Opinion
Please note that from here on out, the text can contain spoilers of the book.
The book gave me quite a bit of trouble to read. I was intrigued by the idea of the author for the story. But I find the main character unlikeable and childish. I think I see where the motivation of Kyle is coming from, having had a childhood without much materialistic good. And his constant quest to make his life “better.” But at times, it is just a bit too dark reading it. But I also could not stop reading it. I had the situation of a dear caught in the headlights of an upcoming car. Unable to run away. I wanted to see the train wreck happening.
The end of the book got better again. But it felt a bit rushed and drawn out at the same time. We had the climax, and then there was a whole additional chapter which sort of dragged on and on.
I liked that Kyle did not compromise on his ideals. And I was surprised that there was a loophole to the terms Mr. Wishkin wanted. In the end, it was a test of character.
I think the switch from downfall to the solution was quite abrupt. And could have been done a bit better. In the end, the resolution felt so easy, and the change of behavior in Kyle was so fast that he read like a different person. I mean, in book time, it happened in one day. But this single day took a whole chapter.
On the other side, I liked that the author redeemed the character; I did not expect it anymore.
