Book notes for Just Fucking Ship by Amy Hoy

Just Fucking Ship by Amy Hoy. Beat your perfectionist and start shipping all your projects. Understand why you are not able to finish projects and repeat the cycle of failing over and over again.

Notes

I like this book very much, but I struggle with executing its principles. I always want to do my projects too big. Or want to add another feature to it. And in turn, they are never finished or released.

But the most important thing to remember is: The first version of a project does not need to be done. It needs to provide value and be launched. As Amy explains, so nicely after the launch is before the launch.

These issues are not unique to me. Everybody who wants’s to ship something is fighting these same issues. The first question to answer is: Do you really want it and why? The correct answer here is not passion, as is explained in the book.

I also enjoyed that the book used a fancy meal as an example project. And that the text itself was written applying the principles it preaches.

So what will I take with me for my next project? Make them smaller and accept that they can’t be perfect. A released project is better than an ideal project gathering dust on your hard drive. And I think I already managed to do this with my calendar generating tool, which was released.

Don’t worry too much about theoretical issues. Define your worst-case scenarios. And search for the one scenario which can happen. Think about possible solutions. What can be the worst that happens when you JFS the blog post or the price increase? When you work on the internet, you can launch as many times as you want. There is no one big launch to make or break you. When an error happens, you fix it and launch the next version.

@josephaleo About what is your project? A podcast perhaps?

by V_ on

@V_ Yep, it’s a podcast. And the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken. Here’s the spiel: Genius and Soul is a new show launching January 1st, 2022. The show will feature a series of mixes from guest deejays from Jazz and Black Classical Music to the many styles and branches of today’s scene. Our show’s efforts will also include fundraising for the Jazz Foundation of America and other relevant charitable organizations. Some people who will guest deejay on the show are legendary composer pianist flautist Brian Jackson; educator, DJ, composer and record producer King Britt; singer/songwriter, jazz pianist, organist, vocalist, composer, and arranger Amina Claudine Myers; and music journalist Phil Freeman. Follow Genius and Soul on your favorite podcast app. Apple Podcasts Breaker Castbox Castro Google Podcasts Overcast Pocket Casts Spotify Stitcher
