On loosing the mobile blogging app

Due to a recent update in Ios, I can no longer update the custom Ios app I created to post blog posts to my home page. I’ve noticed that this decreased my posting frequency a lot. I can no longer post images to my blog without much work. At the moment, I either need to use my desktop computer. Or follow the manual process with a git app on the phone – ouch 1.

I’m not sure what I want to do. The main issue is that I can’t install the latest Xcode version anymore as my iMac is too old. But I don’t want to buy a new one, and I don’t need a new one.

I see two options: I find an alternate way to install the app on my phone again. Or I rewrite the application as a web application, so I can just use it from the browser. It would also simplify progress as I've never paid apple for a dev account, so I needed to reinstall the application every seven days when the development build timed out.

Ok, there would also be a third option, which is not to have the app and not post such posts from when I’m underway. But as my homepage was a replacement for Facebook, I don’t want this. I’ve missed the app a lot in the past weeks. Taking an image at the moment and remembering to post it in the evening is not the same. There is something to just doing it in the context from when you have taken the image.

The main reason I’ve not started with coding yet is that it is a lot of work. And I’m not sure I should spend my free time on another custom solution. These things just don’t scale.

  1. I’ve only tried it once. Checking out the whole repository for my homepage is slow and uploading images with Working Copy on the phone is not easy. It works but not something I want to do regulary. ↩︎
