Thoughts on Hurricane (Hive Mind Book 3) by Janet Edwards
I just finished reading Hurricane (Hive Mind Book 3) by Janet Edwards.📚 And this series is a rare example of an author who has managed to get better with each new installment.
I was wondering what makes this book so much better. And I think it is primarily that the author reveals one or two new key elements of world-building in each book. This additional knowledge answered questions about the world and how the hive could work. And the other part is the excellent solution to limit the power of having a telepathic main character.
And then there is also the fact that I have some story concepts in my writing backlog where I was trying to solve a similar issue. And it is fantastic reading and seeing how somebody else solves the problems you are also struggling with. So I can enjoy this series in two ways: as a reader and aspiring writer trying to tell my own stories.
And it certainly also helps that I like the main character and the supporting cast. Amber was given a position with a lot of responsibility at a young age. And we see her struggle with it – mainly in the second issue, but also in this third book as well. And she is growing after each adventure and learning how to be a better Hiveist.
After reading the first book, I was very suspicious of how the hive as a concept could work. And was expecting that, at some point, we would find that the hive is a dystopia. But after reading the third book, I’m starting to believe that the author is describing a utopia. And is answering the questions of why it is working.
