After watching the movie Civil War (2024), I wanted to write about what I thought of the film. But I was unable to find the right words. I only was able to write this: I watched this movie the other night and it is still with me. It is a long time since I had such a visceral reaction to a movie. And I can’t decide whether I liked it or not.

Here is another example of using ChatGTP for a simple problem, and it returns compiling code that is totally wrong. I needed to get all the neighbors in a spiral pattern from a given starting point. I initially forgot to specify that it needed to be a spiral and that I wanted the code in Swift (the first time it generated Python, which I have omitted1). I have a grid with a given amount of columns and rows.

CrowdStrike and the risk of using homogeneous infrastructure

With the whole CrowdStrike debacle12 yesterday3, I wonder how this could happen and why so many companies are using the same solution – automatically updated without any tests on the customer’s site. Why do you set up your infrastructure so it can deploy updates to your productive system without any (manual) tests beforehand? Or at least delay the deployment until a short grace period so you can see whether there is a big issue with it.

It’s another cool morning. The birds are singing outside of my cabin, and the frogs are quacking in the pond. I stock the fire and heat fresh water to brew some tea. While the water is heating, I start my morning yoga session. It warms me up and removes the last leftovers of the night’s sleepiness. Drinking my tea and eating the last of my bread for breakfast, I gather the energy to till my plot next to the cabin.

Three months ago, I stopped practicing my piano. I played nearly daily for over three years, but it’s over now. It looks like my brain cannot learn this instrument, which makes me sad. Since I stopped the lessons, I only sat once at the piano to play for myself. So why did I stop? And what is the issue with it? And what does it imply for me?

As I traveled to the city, the house passed past the bus’s windows. The sky is grey and dull. The bus stops at the next bus stop, and another person enters. I stand up and block their way – I can’t explain how this happens. I get an annoyed look back. They move to the other side to circle me, and I follow. “Oh, come on, move out of the way,” they say.

As I walk through the city, the sun rises over the ruins of an old skyscraper. I reach the small park where my assignment is today. Three mature trees greet me, but I first focus on the young pine tree on the left side of the park. It lost most of its remaining leaves since my last visit. “Come on, little buddy, you can make it,” I say to it. “I brought the special medicine I told you about last week.” I pour a whole bottle of a special fertilizer around the tree. I hope it will save this little tree. “Now drink it and get better; I will try to revisit you soon,” I say to it. And move on to the adult trees.
